The viviparous lizard or common lizard, Zootoca vivipara (formerly Lacerta vivipara), is as its name suggests Common. But not in dense dark pine woods, which is what our wood was 3 years ago.

Today for the first time I spotted a lizard. I did not think there was much likelihood of them ever populating our woodland because it is still surrounded on two sides by dense pines, on one side by a road and on the fourth side by farmland populated by sheep, goats and geese.

Anyway it found its way and seems to be using a pile of old sticks as home base. I just hope it has a friend of the opposite sex.

Remarkable how nature recovers given a chance.
